Disclaimer: Don't own anything... only wished I did :( this is a sort of challenge for the last scene of Blow To The Heart where the guy locks himself in the safe and dies and Tessa is all frustrated and sad, grief stricken at the events that lead to his death. So I challenged a friend, dreigiau (neela) to write a short post-Ep drabble for this. We both had a crack at it, and this is my contribution!
Pulling up in front of her block of flats, Steve turned the car off, taking a second to gather his thoughts before turning towards Tessa. He'd offered to drive her home after he found her close to breaking down outside, by the car. He could see how hard she was trying to keep it together and knew she would only drive herself into the ground back at the office, hiding what she was really feeling inside. Looking at her, he noticed that she hadn't moved the whole trip back from the labs, she was submerged in her own head and sat quietly in the passengers seat, her hands resting, tensely, in her lap and her head was turned towards the window.
“Tess,” he gently spoke, waiting for her to turn her head towards him. "Please Tess," he plead, his voice wavering and his unspoken question hung in the air. When she finally looked at him he saw her red rimmed eyes and the dried tear tracks that stained her cheeks. Her defenses were beginning to crumble and it wouldn't be long before she would be seeking comfort in his arms like she had done once before. The stress had gotten to her and she had simply crashed.
“Tess, you know you can trust me,” He gently coaxed, looking into her blue eyes. Slowly, but surely, he was beginning to chip away at her resolve, coaxing her to let him in, to trust him.
“I promise not to judge you.” Tessa could feel the tears begin to well in her eyes and she was sure that Steve could see them too as she broke eye contact, a lone tear sliding down her cheek to drip off her chin and into her lap.
“I’ll be here for you no matter what.”A muffled sob passed her lips as she listened to what Steve was saying. He really was such a sweet man and she didn't know what she had done to deserve his loyalty.
“Let me be there for you Tess, please.” Steve plead, a single tear falling down his cheek.
Reaching across the centre console of the car, Tessa picked up one of Steve's larger hands in her own and gently squeezed it, trying to convey everything she felt into that single gesture.
“Thank you.” Came the soft whisper. “Thank you for being there for me through everything.”
Steve smiled his million watt smile and reached across the car, gently wiping away a tear that rolled down her cheek with his thumb.
He answered with one word that conveyed everything that mattered in their partnership and friendship. That single word conveyed every feeling, every look, every touch, and every friendly gesture between them.
